Our First March
Our Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration started out in very humble beginnings back on January 18, 1993.
Community organizers of Biscoe staged a march starting from the top of Leach Street to the Community Center
in Weavertown. 30 citizens walked to the Center where we commenced our march by praying, drinking hot
chocolate, and fellowshipping.
Evolving into a 3-Day King Celebration
After a few years of steady increase in volunteers and marchers, we decided that we would take advantage of our
growth and participation by taking our annual march to a new level. In 1995, our march would be renamed 'celebration'
as it would entail a 3-day event consisting of a Banquet honoring outstanding citizens in the community on Saturday.
Sunday would host our Spiritual program while we sponsored our Annual March/Youth Day on Monday.
Our Annual Booklet crystalizes our celebration by highlighting each of our Honorees' bios.
Our booklet also gives local businesses and organizations an opportunity to support our
events and advertise their services.
Today's Success & Blessings
The Citizens for Dr. King have recently celebrated 11 years of paying tribute to Dr. King. Year after year, we have
sought the assistance and contributions of our loyal volunteers, community leaders, local churches and organizations,
county officials, county commissioners, the school system, and just about anyone willing to lend a helping hand. And
let us say, that we were not let down. Our banquet is drawing an average attendance of 300+ and we have LITERALLY
marched through rain, sleet, and snow (yes SNOW!) since our first march in 1993.
We have enjoyed serving the community of Montgomery County while carrying on Dr. King's Legacy. We would like to
thank all of the volunteers that have contributed their time, money, and efforts over the years. Every year, when all
is said and done, we reflect back on the weekend's events and actually wonder how we pull it off year after year. But
it's quite simple, with the help of God and the participation of the community, we know that ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.
